The Borrowers
In a cozy, slightly eerie old house surrounded by an overgrown garden, tiny people called the Borrowers lived under the floorboards. Arietty was a young Borrower girl, filled with curiosity and bravery. She lived with her father, Pod, and her mother, Homily. One tranquil evening, after the rain had stopped, casting a glistening sheen over the garden, Arrietty’s father sat her down. “It’s time,” Pod said gently. “You’re ready to go borrowing.” Arrietty’s heart thumped with excitement. Borrowing meant venturing into the house above, to take small things humans wouldn’t miss – like a button or a matchstick. Homily handed Arrietty a tiny, thimble-sized bag. “Be careful, my dear,” she said. “Humans are big and dangerous.” Full of anticipation, Arrietty followed her father through a series of secret tunnels and up a small ladder leading to a hidden door in the wall. With a slight push, they entered the grand expanse of the human house, enormous and full of wonder. “Stay close, Arrietty,” Pod whispered. They crept along the edges of the room, their eyes wide at the towering furniture. Suddenly, a booming noise echoed through the house. It was the sound of human footsteps! Arrietty froze, but Pod gently nudged her on. “We have to be brave,” he said. They quickly hid behind a stack of books as a large shadow moved across the room. Arrietty peeked out and saw the Boy. He must have been around ten years old, with a kind face full of curiosity. The Boy knelt down, his eyes scanning the room. “Did I just see…?” he whispered to himself. His eyes landed on the books, and he noticed a tiny scrap of fabric hanging from Arrietty’s bag. Creeping slowly, Arrietty’s heart raced. Any movement could reveal them. But the Boy suddenly smiled and whispered, “Hello? Is anyone there?” Pod decided to reveal themselves. “We mean no harm,” he said, stepping out cautiously. Arrietty followed, clutching her bag tightly. The Boy’s eyes widened, but he didn’t look scared. Instead, he looked fascinated. “Who are you?” “We’re Borrowers,” Arrietty answered, standing tall and proud. “We live under the floorboards and borrow things you don’t need.” The Boy’s eyes sparkled with excitement. “You don’t have to borrow from me secretly. I’ll share my things with you! My name’s Tommy.” For the next few days, Tommy and the Borrowers formed a secret friendship. Tommy would leave small gifts for them—like beads and buttons—while Arrietty told him stories of their tiny adventures. One evening, as the sun cast long shadows across the garden, Tommy handed Arrietty a small, ornamental key. “It’s a special key to my toy chest,” he said. “You can have anything inside.” Arrietty beamed with gratitude. “Thank you, Tommy. This means so much to us.” And so, the Borrowers continued their lives, no longer in fear of humans but as friends with Tommy. They navigated new adventures with renewed confidence and joy, knowing that bravery and kindness could build bridges between even the smallest of creatures and the largest of beings.
