The Paper Bag Princess
Once upon a time, in a land of mysterious forests and shimmering lakes, there was a young princess named Elizabeth. Elizabeth lived in a cozy castle with her prince, Ronald. Her room was filled with beautiful dresses and shiny jewels, and she always wore the finest gowns. But Elizabeth wasn’t just a pretty princess; she had a heart full of adventure. One bright afternoon, as Elizabeth was daydreaming by her window, a shadow crossed the sky. She looked up and gasped—an enormous dragon was swooping down! With a mighty roar, the dragon set the castle ablaze and carried off Ronald. "Ronald! No!" Elizabeth cried. She watched the dragon fly away, her eyes wide with fear but also determination. After the smoke cleared, Elizabeth realized her beautiful clothes were gone, burned to ashes. She looked around and spotted a simple paper bag lying on the floor, untouched by the flames. Without wasting a moment, she slipped it on. "This will do," she said, her voice filled with resolve. She gathered her courage and set off to rescue Ronald. Clutching her magic map, a gift from her wise old grandmother, Elizabeth marched through the forest. As the sun began to set, she came across a talking squirrel named Nuts. "Where are you off to, Princess?" Nuts asked, scurrying closer. "I'm off to save Ronald from the dragon," Elizabeth declared. Nuts nodded and offered help. "I know a shortcut through the Firefly Forest. Follow me!" Together, they navigated through the flickering lights and whispering trees until they reached the dragon's cave. With Nuts by her side, Elizabeth edged closer to the entrance. "Dragon!" she called out boldly. "I am Princess Elizabeth. Show yourself!" The enormous dragon emerged, its scales shimmering like molten gold. "What do you want, princess in a paper bag?" it rumbled. "I’ve come to claim back Ronald!" Elizabeth stated firmly. The dragon laughed, its breath hot and smoky. "He's mine now. Unless you can outsmart me, he stays." Elizabeth wasn't afraid. "Show me your mightiest feats, then!" she challenged. The dragon took to the skies, performing loops and breathings streams of fire. Elizabeth watched carefully, observing how the dragon grew tired with each feat. She clapped and cheered, outsmarting the dragon by praising its strength until it was completely exhausted. Once the dragon had collapsed on the ground, Elizabeth seized her chance. "You are indeed the mightiest dragon, but you’ve tired yourself out. Allow me to collect Prince Ronald and go." Too drained to argue, the dragon grunted and waved her off. She dashed into the cave, pulling a bewildered Ronald to safety. Outside, however, Ronald looked at Elizabeth in her paper bag with disdain. "Elizabeth, how embarrassing! A princess shouldn’t look like this. Come back when you're dressed like a real princess." Elizabeth stared at him. "Ronald," she began calmly, "I just outsmarted a dragon and saved your life. If you can't see the courage behind my paper bag, then you're not worth my time." With that, she turned away, Nuts leaping beside her. Together, they walked back to the castle, leaving behind an amazed yet foolish prince. Elizabeth lived happily ever after, knowing her true strength wasn’t in her clothes but in her heart, with Nuts by her side for all her adventures. And whenever she faced a new challenge, she met it head-on—always ready, just as she was.
